Hardly a week goes by without an influencer, celebrity or athlete announcing they’re launching a new podcast. Podcasts are booming. While only 11 percent of Americans listened to podcasts regularly in 2006, by 2021 that figure had risen to 57 percent. There is no study for Germany, but the figures are likely to be similar.
Podcasts with added value thanks to video recording
There are around 4.5 million podcasts worldwide. Standing out from this crowd and attracting new listeners is often difficult for companies, but not impossible. How about a video podcast, for example. Few podcasters go this route yet and prefer to rely on audio podcasts. But there are numerous advantages, which we list in more detail in this blog post. In addition, you will learn why the Livestream Studio is also wonderfully suited for podcast recordings.
Vodcast, Videocast or Vidcast: as the name suggests, a video podcast is a recorded podcast with video. The usual audio recording is thus extended by, for example, a static image, a player or film recording of the podcast recording. Podcasts are used by many people: bloggers, influencers, athletes, companies, government agencies and many more. The purpose of a podcast is to inform as well as entertain or even impart knowledge. This is when we speak of an Educast.
The 6 advantages of a video podcast
Increase reach
By adding the visual part, the target audience is much larger than with an audio-only podcast. For example, one in eight online users prefers a video to a blog post. This can be transferred to video podcasts in the same way. Another plus point is that video podcasts have significantly higher share rates than audio-only podcasts. This increases the reach even further.
Deeper connection between podcaster and audience
Whether we like a person and listen to them more closely depends largely on their gestures and facial expressions. We can gain much more information from facial expressions and understand statements better than if we were just listening to them. The bond is strengthened between podcaster and audience.
Improved Google ranking
The vidcast is often uploaded to YouTube. Since the platform belongs to Google, the findability via the search engine also improves.
Increasing attention
We all know it: we’re listening to a podcast and all of a sudden our mind wanders and we’re thinking about something completely different. We can easily get distracted and the focus changes. With a video podcast, on the other hand, all our attention is focused on the video and we are more receptive.
Impart knowledge better
This aspect is especially true for knowledge podcast. A complex topic can be explained much more clearly if you can still use infographics, images or presentations to help. The viewer can follow the subject much better, so they can convey their message better.
Recycle the material
After recording a video podcast, you have some material that you can use for different purposes. The podcast can also be uploaded as an audio only podcast on popular platforms. Smaller snippets can also be posted on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok to generate more awareness.
The disadvantages compared to an audio podcast
But where there are advantages, there must also be disadvantages. And of course we don’t want to keep these from you.
A normal audio podcast can be easily integrated into everyday life. Whether it’s on the way to work, during sports or when going for a walk in the evening: just put on the headphones and go. In addition, audio podcasts consume less data volume and are thus more suitable for a mobile target group. For recording, the podcaster only needs a microphone and a recording device. Lights, tripod and camera would have to be purchased separately and set up optimally for a video podcast. And last but not least, the amount of work required for a pure sound recording is much less than for a film recording.
It’s not for nothing that audio podcasts have been so popular so far and reach countless people. But if you want to stand out from the crowd, you should definitely consider a video podcast.
In the next blog post in our little series about video podcast, we’ll clarify what different types there are, from static image to remote interview.
